Candidate Requirements

Recognizes outstanding teaching in adaptive physical education.

The candidate should:  hold an established professional position in an education or physical activity setting, have a minimum of five years teaching experience in physical education, health education or a related field. currently specializing in adaptive physical education, spending the majority of their teaching responsibilities with special populations.

Recognizes individuals with outstanding contributions to the health and physical education fields.

The candidate should: have a Master’s degree or equivalent credentials in an education, health, or physical education discipline, have ten year’s experience as a director, supervisor and/or teacher in the health/physical education field, have held a SHAPE-VT membership for five years with at least two consecutive years preceding the presentation of the award.

Recognizes outstanding teaching in health education at the elementary, middle, or secondary. One, two, or all three levels of teaching may be honored at the annual conference.

The candidate should: hold a current teaching endorsement in health education or a public health certification or equivalent credentials appropriate to the field of public health, have a minimum of five years of experience in health education, and holds  a SHAPE-VT membership. A minimum of greater than 50% of total job responsibilities is teaching health education.

*The names of the Vermont Teachers of the Year (TOYs) are submitted, by the SHAPE-VT Awards Committee, to the Eastern District(ED) Association for consideration as the District TOY. ED TOYs winners are then forwarded to SHAPE-America for national consideration. The Nominee will be responsible for completing an information form for their nomination to be considered.

Recognizes outstanding teaching and service in higher education, directly related to the health and physical education fields.

The candidate should: be employed by a Vermont college or university, have a minimum of five years of collegiate-level teaching experience in a health or physical education field, displays evidence of professional commitment and community service, and holds a SHAPE-VT membership.

Recognizes outstanding individuals who actively promote lifelong health and physical activity. This award is not necessarily a teaching award. Potential candidates include, but are not limited to; dance educators, recreational employees, principals, general education teachers, parents, or community members.  This candidate does not need to be a SHAPE-VT member.

Candidates should: have five or more years of experience promoting the idea of a healthy, active community, consistently advocate for health and physical activity, primarily in an educational setting.

Recognizes up to two outstanding undergraduate students who demonstrate great commitment to promoting the service of health and physical activity in education. Nominations must come from an institutional faculty member.

Candidates should: be enrolled in a Vermont institution of higher education, plan to enter a health or physical education profession upon graduation, have a commitment to serving and advocating for the health and physical education fields, possess a minimum GPA of 3.00 (4.00=A)

*The names of the Outstanding Future Professional recipients will be eligible to take part in the Eastern District Leadership Development and other national-level opportunities and the district-wide recognition of OFPs.  

*The person completing this nomination need not be a SHAPE-VT member, but should be a faculty member knowledgeable about the candidate’s academic ability. Multiple nominations for the same candidate are welcome but are not necessary.

Recognizes outstanding teaching in elementary, middle, or high school physical education. One, two, or all three levels will be honored at the annual conference.

Candidates should: Hold a current licensure endorsement in physical education and holds  a SHAPE-VT membership. Have a minimum five years of teaching experience, Be full time teaching at submission & selection of nomination.

Recognizes an outstanding beginning teacher who demonstrates great commitment to promoting health, wellness, and physical activity in education.

Candidates should: Have a current Vermont Level 1 teaching license, have one to four years of teaching experience in health or physical education fields, promotes the teaching of health, wellness, and physical activity, and holds  a SHAPE-VT membership.

Award recipients must be current members of SHAPE VT unless the award criteria stipulates otherwise.  Individuals may not receive the same award more than once in a fifteen year period. A person may be a candidate for no more than one award during any one year.  In the event that a nomination for one person is received from two or more different nominators and the nominations are for different awards, the awards committee will decide which award fits best.
